Itinerary

DAY 1 

Arrive in Bhutan and drive to Thimpu, the capital city. Along the way, visit Tacho Gompa Monastery to see its 15th Century iron bridge. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before heading up the mountains to visit Kuenselphodrang, where a giant golden Buddha was built looking over Thimpu. Finally stop at the Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the third king of Bhutan. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 2

Breakfast at the hotel. Spend the day exploring Thimpu, a tiny capital city that doesn't even have traffic lights! Spend time at the Academy of Arts and Crafts where students learn traditional Bhutanese art forms, then head to the Folk Heritage Museum to learn more about Bhutan's history and culture.  After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Changgankha Monastery and the Takin Sanctuary. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 3

After breakfast, drive to Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan where the traditional agrarian lifestyle is still common. Stop at Dochula Pass for an incredible view of the mountains and 108 stupas. After descending into the Punakha valley visit Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant, then visit the Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup nunnery and Nobgang village. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 4

After breakfast, visit the village of Nezigang before hiking to Khamsum Yuley Namgay Chorten, shrine built by the royal family. Enjoy a special picnic lunch along the river in Punakha. Visit the Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's former winter capital and now the winter home of the head abbot of Bhutan. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 5

After breakfast, drive back to Paro. Enjoy a lunch in a traditional farmhouse. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum and Paro Rinpong Dzong, one of the largest castle-fortresses in Bhutan. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 6

After breakfast head to the mountains to hike up to the Taktshang Monastery, better known as the Tiger's Nest Monastery. You can choose to take a horse half way up the mountain, or hike the whole way.  Break for lunch at the teahouse halfway up the mountain, and hike back down. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 7

Breakfast at the hotel. Return to the airport for your journey back home.
