Itinerary:
Day 1 - Transfer to Libaran Island by boat and explore the nearby fisherman's village. After lunch, go to Selingan Turtle Island by boat to watch turtles lay eggs on the beach, transfer the turtle eggs to the hatchery and help release baby turtles to the sea. Overnight on Libaran Island.
Day 2 - Return to Mainland and visit the Gomantong Caves, home to over a million bats and where bird's nests are harvested as a delicacy. The area surrounding the caves are also home to many beautiful species of birds. Continue to the Sukau River Lodge where you will take a boat trip down the Kinabatangan River. If weather permits, there will be a night walk into the forest to search for insects, frogs and beetles after dinner. Overnight at the Sukau River Lodge.
Day 3 - Take an early morning boat trip to see the orangutans, macaques, crocodiles, civet cats, otters, exotic birds and monkeys. Hike through the forest to get up close to some of these amazing animals. Overnight at the Sukau River Lodge.
Day 4- Visit the world famous Sepilok Orangutan Center, where they rehabilitate captive and orphaned orangutans before releasing them into the wild, to feed and play with the orangutans. After lunch, hike to the Observation Pavilion for a bird's eye view of Sandakan. Tour the Central Market in Sandakan, followed by the Chinese Temple, St. Michael's Church and Sim Sim, where the houses are built on stilts to protect them from the tides.
Accommodations at the Sukau River Lodge are considered basic. Please remember to bring towels, toiletries and any personal items necessary for a two night stay on the trip with you. Bringing insect repellent, sun block and rain gear is a must.
